DESCRIPTIONS
10:00-11:30am Tolkien Reading Day. Hosted by the Esgaroth Smial, the first chapter of the now-international event. Join us and take turns reading aloud from J.R.R. Tolkien’s works! The featured readings this year will be from The Two Towers, Book III, Chapters 10 and 11: “The Voice of Saruman” and “The Palantir”–appropriate in our remote-viewing times!
11:30am-noon Show Off Your Collection. Got a collection of toys, comics, games, costumes, or anything else related to geek culture? Show it off to everyone else during this session. We’ll just take turns letting people show everyone what they’ve lovingly accumulated in their favorite fandoms. This is only half an hour; if we can’t fit everyone’s collections in during this time, come back at the “Relax and Chart” timeslot later and we’ll be happy to look at more collections then as well!
Noon-1pm Paint Your Own Tabletop Miniatures Along with Us! Exactly what it says. Relax and have fun painting some of your own tabletop miniatures, like D&D figures, X-Wing ships, or Warhammer 40K figures, along with us. Chris Wildrick will be painting some of his own D&D figures. Grab some of your own figures that you’ve always wanted to transform from drab to fab, some paint and paintbrushes, turn on your Zoom, and we can chat as we all mutually paint our figures! We can discuss our paint preferences, color choices, and brush size, or we can just show off our favorite figures.
1:00-2:00 pm A 501st Legion/Rebel Legion Scavenger Hunt. Great for the kids! Star Wars characters will host a scavenger hunt that can be accomplished in your own home. Hosted by Garrison Excelsior and Rebel Base, the local chapters of the Star Wars costuming groups known for their skill, accuracy, and fun.
2:00-3:00pm Natalie Riess Portfolio Review. After her talk from 1:00-2:00 (visit the Art tab), Natalie will review portfolios by artists interested in the comics profession. Sign up by emailing Chris Wildrick at cwildric@syr.edu.
3:00-4:00pm Cosplay Demo by Barr Foxx and Dean’s Lyst. Topic: Sewing Boot Covers (a tricky but important part of many cosplays!).
Barr Foxx is an award-winning cosplay artist and television/film producer. His national brand, Cosplay Your Way, promotes cosplay through imagery, video and live events while encouraging individuals to embrace the art of cosplay and choose desired characters, regardless of race, age, size or gender. Barr Foxx has been featured in a variety of videos, podcasts and cosplay themed books such as Cosplay in America Volume 2, on Marvel’s and BET’s official websites, and in various articles spotlighting cosplayers to watch. You can see him and learn more about his contributions to the world of cosplay in the documentary, Cosplay Your Way: In Color, currently airing. “Cosplay is more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. Use YOUR voice, express YOUR style and do it YOUR way.” Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube.
Walter Dean is a premier costume designer who specializes in custom-made costumes. Through his designing company, Dean’s Lyst, he brings characters to life by merging his expertise with the vision of his clients, providing them with the opportunity to become their fandom. A master at his craft, Dean was spotlighted by Marvel in the “Marvel Becoming” series for his stellar Dora Milaje costume designs from the Black Panther movie. As he continues to make a reputable name for himself in the world of design and cosplay, Dean consistently challenges himself to expand his skill-set and create “smart designs.” Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Etsy.
4:00-5:00pm Relax and Chat About Your Favorite Comics and Movies. If you’ve been frustrated to sit at home, unable to talk to people live about your favorite comics, movies, mange, and anime, here’s your chance to really talk with folks! The Snyder cut of Justice League is coming out Thursday, and the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier is coming out Friday, so there will be plenty of new stuff to talk about! We’ll have some pre-set conversational topics to get things going, but this is really an open-ended time to just hang out and talk with fellow fans.
5:00-5:30pm Who Wins? Character Battle Debating. Argue against your fellow audience members or the host about why one character can beat up another character! We will provide the character match-ups–some classic, some ridiculous–and you provide the arguments for why one would win. Hosted by Chris Wildrick, an online Hall of Fame comic battle debater.
We will give a $25 Gift Card to Comix Zone–generously provided by the North Syracuse comic store–to the session’s best debater!
5:30-6:00pm Lightsaber Dueling and Forms. The Gathering of Sabers and Ithaca Sabers, members of the international Terra Prime Light Armory lightsaber and martial arts group, will show videos of their dueling and forms.
